A Kind of Eden
A Kind of Eden is a love letter to my queerness and my younger self.
Reclaiming and celebrating the feminine aesthetics I could never fully explore growing up, these paintings symbolize the identity and spirituality I’ve created in the aftermath of religious and societal pressures. These works explore my changing relationship with the Midwest while visualizing a warmer, more magical world that I longed for during my repressed adolescence.
These pop-surreal paintings blend traditional techniques with a contemporary digital aesthetic, capturing the wanderlust of childhood through a candy-colored palette. This body of work explores fairylands and flora, embodying the confidence that replaced what had been fear earlier in my life. Twelve “Dream Disciples” that are inspired by childhood role models, the femininity I could not embody, astrology, and the escape that nature provided throughout my youth close the series.
This work pays homage to the little boy who carved love letters into tree trunks and played with “forbidden” Barbies before he met the cruelness of the world.
